If We Were Serious About Doing Something About Violence And The Use Of Chemical Weapons…

Thrive-JeffBell_Close_Cropped_Headshot_10-29-2013Most of the time I am able to restrain myself from posting political views on this site.  I try to keep it focused as strictly as possible on health, only.  In this case, as I watch the most powerful nation in human history prepare to bomb yet another relatively weak nation that poses no direct threat to the U.S.A. at all, (how many has it been in the last 20 years – I have long since lost count of just how many nations the U.S.A. has done this to) and I consider the number of innocent civilians, many of them women and children who will die and be grievously injured, I just cannot keep silent.

And for those who say, stick to health, I say being bombed is bad for your health, really bad!  So here is what I posted on Facebook this morning.  If you find it makes sense to you, please share near and wide.  Please spread the word.

So what’s next for Syria at the hands of the U.S., (the world’s self-appointed police force)?

Most likely there will be a token debate on whether or not the U.S. bombs Syria when  Congress returns to session.  Most likely the U.S. will proceed to bomb Syria, and that will certainly make many of the relatively uninformed among the U.S. population feel better.  Who will really benefit will be the arms merchants and manufacturers who make the munitions used for this so-called “punitive police action”.  Please do not misunderstand.  I am not condoning the Assad regime, and whoever else may have been involved – not by a long shot.

However, I have an alternative and radical proposal.  My hope is that if I put it out there often enough, maybe it will enter enough of the collective consciousness of those who really care about the world and who have any moral fiber left intact so that it will even be considered.  In order for any regime, such as the Assad regime in Syria to use chemical weapons someone has to have sold them the weapons, and the means to use them, or at least the raw materials for same.  If the NSA has the technology to determine the last 10 phone calls I made and the last 50 e-mails I sent, then surely they have the means to discover where Syria got the weapons and/or means of production.  So why not take the executives of the companies involved and indict them in the World Court for accessory to murder.  And while we are at it, why not indict the executives of any companies that have sold anyone any of the technology for chemical weapons production or use in the last 20 years or so for either conspiracy to commit murder and war crimes if the weapons were not used, or as accessory if they were?  There is quite widespread agreement among most nations that the use of chemical weapons is NEVER acceptable.  And in the U.S. it is a crime to sell them to any entity that is likely to use them.  Therefore, there is no valid reason to design, manufacture or sell them at all.  So why not put the force of law behind these concepts.

Think of the impact that would have!  Far better than some sort of punitive military action against the Assad regime, which will certainly escalate the already terrible violence in that war-torn country, and which even the most optimistic promoters of such operations admit will result in a large number of deaths to innocent civilians.

If this makes sense to you, maybe we can start a petition to the World Court, or to several such bodies.  Perhaps we can get the likes of Robert Fisk, Dennis Kucinich, Ralph Nader, Barbara Lee, Cynthia McKinney and others involved.  And there are even some relatively conservative political figures who likely would stand behind this.  Ron Paul and his son Rand come to mind.  This could become a movement with real widespread appeal and momentum behind it.

How about it?  Who is in on this?  What are some practical next steps?  The clock is ticking.  Perhaps this is a golden window of opportunity to make a real difference in our world.  Let us not waste it.

Yours for a more peaceful and just world,

Jeff Bell

In addition to the above, I would like to add:  If you are a lawyer or other skilled person who might know how to craft a petition or other action to promote this please contact me.  I do not have skills in that area, but feel this is important to try and get done before it is too late.
